A beautifully detailed Celtic cross that is a replica of the Saint Cuthbert's cross with a garnet center in solid sterling silver.

Cuthbert (c. 634 – 20 March 687) is a saint of the early Northumbrian church in the Celtic tradition. He was a monk associated with the monasteries of Melrose and Lindisfarne in the Kingdom of Northumbria, in North East England and the South East of Scotland.

He became one of the most important medieval saints of Northern England, with a cult centered on his tomb at Durham Cathedral. Cuthbert is regarded as the patron saint of Northern England.

Cuthbert grew up near Old Melrose Abbey, a daughter-house of Lindisfarne, today in Scotland.

On 17th May 1827, the tomb of Saint Cuthbert was opened and, as well as the saint’s body, rare and extraordinary objects were found. Now known as the Relics or Treasures of St Cuthbert, they were either used by Cuthbert during his lifetime, or given to him as offerings shortly after his death. They reveal a great deal about the art, artefacts and complex cultural traditions of Northumbrian Christianity.

This solid sterling silver cross is a replica of the cross Saint Cuthbert was wearing. This ‘pectoral’ (worn on the chest) cross is the earliest item found in Saint Cuthbert’s coffin. It may have been buried with him when he died in 687 or placed in the coffin in 698 when Cuthbert’s sainthood was recognised.

Pendant is 1 1/4" x 1 1/4" with a 3-D double sided design. The cross is SOLID sterling silver - a heavy piece that will be treasured for a lifetime.
